WHAT TO EXPECT ON A THERAPY DAY

Given the focus of Vista Neuropsychology on rehabilitation and intervention for neurologic injury and illness, psychotherapy is typically focused on addressing challenges (cognitive and emotional) related to these disorders.

Therapy sessions last approximately 45-50 minutes. For our first session, this may be extended to 90 minutes in order to provide additional time for getting to know one another, your current concerns, and how therapy can be most useful to you during this time. Feel free to have an open conversation about likes, dislikes, what has been helpful in the past, and preferred communication style.

Please plan to arrive 5 minutes prior to your appointment, and have a seat in the waiting area. Dr. Jacocks will meet you there and bring you to the office. You might bring a water and jacket.  The schedule for therapy will be individualized based on the person’s needs, schedule and availability.

Dr. Jacocks does offer telehealth psychotherapy. One to two sessions are required in person to establish a plan of care, then can be continued via telehealth.

WHAT TO EXPECT ON ASSESSMENT DAY

A neuropsychological evaluation usually consists of an interview and testing.

During the interview portion (60-90 minutes), information that is important for a neuropsychologist to consider will be reviewed. You will be asked about your symptoms, medical history, medications, and other important factors such as mental, physical, and emotional well-being. Please bring a close family member, companion, or caregiver to be present during this portion.

Testing involves taking paper-and-pencil or computerized tests and answering questions. The time required depends on the problem being assessed. In general, several hours are needed to assess the many skills involved in processing information. Some tests will be easy while others will be more complex. The most important thing is to try your best. We will proceed with testing until noon, when we will take a 45-60 minute break for lunch. This break is important not only for nutrition, but to provide mental rest.

Testing will be completed following lunch. It is difficult to estimate how long testing will take, but it is generally between four and six hours in total. Any materials you need for testing (pencil, paper) will be provided.

Please bring with you:

  • Prior neuropsychological testing report (if applicable), pertinent medical records, medication list
  • Completed history questionnaire
  • Reading glasses and/or hearing aids, if needed
  • Sweater
  • Water, snacks
  • Lunch (1hr break will be provided; several restaurants are also nearby)

Results and Feedback: After testing is completed, it will take approximately two to four weeks to produce a formal report. In most cases, a feedback session will be scheduled to discuss findings and recommendations with you. In some cases, other arrangements may be made, but it is of upmost important to me that you leave my services with a clear understanding of results, their importance and implications, and suggestions for further treatment.

Directions and Parking

Visitor parking is located on the second floor of the parking garage. Please bring your ticket with you to the appointment for validation.

Once you’ve entered the building from the parking garage, walk straight ahead towards the welcome/security desk. Turn right at the desk as indicated by signs for the elevator. There are two buildings; please use the elevator for the North building and proceed to the penthouse (PH). After exiting the elevator you may check in with the receptionist and/or have a seat in the waiting area. Dr. Jacocks will meet you there and then proceed to the office.

The building and office space are wheelchair accessible, however, please let us know if you are using a manual or power wheelchair so that accommodations can be made to facilitate a smooth appointment.
